The Lithuania Tribune informs that, on 13 October, the Parliament registered a parliamentary group called “For the Traditional Family.” The group has a total of 91 founder MPs.

“We want to say that Parliament views (traditional) family as a priority and something to strive for,” says Peasant Populist MP Rima Braskiene, explaining the reasons behind the launching of such a parliamentary group.

She remarked that the Family and Child Affairs Committee was active during the last legislature, but its activity were discontinued. The new group will assume them.

According to Rima Braskiene, the MPs who are a part of this parliamentary group want to show that they support the traditional family based on a marriage between a man and a woman, and that they will fight for the protection of these values.

“We will participate in specific activities, and promote and campaign for the traditional family,” said the politician.

The parliamentary group was established soon after the Lithuanian Constitutional Court ruled that the national family plan provided an unconstitutional definition of a family by stating that a family can only be based upon a marriage between a man and a woman.

Also, this week, Marija Ausrine Pavilioniene, a member of the Parliament, introduced a draft law for same-sex civil partnership.
